Wow. Just… wow.
How much meaning can people invent out of whole cloth for a single picture? Apparently a whole lot if they’re willing to go to the trouble of photoshop’ing the thing so that it’s “more easily understood by Americans”.
Look, first of all. That’s not a thumbs-up gesture. Notice the person’s hand is open and the fingers are not curled in. Nor is the thumb even fully extended vertically (unless this is Megan Fox?) If I were to imprint my own interpretation on this, I’d say it appears this person is reaching out as an entreaty.
The fact that this person is out in front of the Iranian President’s vehicle is a powerful statement… but not necessarily one of protest. Again, were I to input my spin - and note that I identify it as such - I’d say it’s a powerful statement of peace.
Here is the original un-photoshopped photo. A middle finger isn’t necessary because a thumbs up is a middle eastern insult.
Regardless of her gesture, the mere fact of her standing in the way of the President’s car is a powerful image.
